Hosting your zone

Connect the authoritative name servers offered by the .lu registry to your domain name.

Free of charge

To be able to manage the content of your DNS zone, it is crucial to have stable and secure hosting. Consequently, authoritative servers with automatic DNSSEC security are offered by the registry to be used exclusively via the online registration platform.

All information connected to a domain name is therefore hosted with Restena which also manages the domain names registration infrastructure in .lu, with a direct connection to its master server.

  • Your DS servers and registrations are automatically configured
  • You benefit from a high resiliency thanks to the use of anycast servers (located across Europe in order to be in the closest proximity to visitors and their DNS requests)
  • Your domain name is DNSSEC-protected

How to benefit?

When you register your domain name, select the 'Active, hosted zone' option in the 'Domain Name Status' section.

Additional information

  • This feature is available at any time without any additional charge.
  • Importing existing DSes is vital for incoming transfers from a current DNSSEC-signed zone
  • In the event of an outgoing transfer, you should recover your DSes and communicate them to your new host

Configuring your servers

Configure at least two DNS servers connected to your .lu domain name

Free of charge

To make available websites and/or mailboxes connected to a domain name, DNS servers have to be linked to this same domain name. These computers, when they respond to address requests within the domain name system, make information connected to a domain name and, by extension, the Internet, live.

These authoritative servers are provided by Internet Service Providers (ISP) as part of their hosting service. Data from this hosting will be configured when a domain name is activated.

  • You operate your domain names

  • You communicate via the registered domain name

  • You edit your DNS server data

How to benefit?

Your domain name must be active in order to be able to configure your DNS servers.

From the "Domain name status" section, fill in the details of your servers (name + address in IPv4 or IPv6 format) in the ‘DNS Server#1’ to ‘DNS Server#6’ fields. At least two DNS servers are required.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

I've registered a domain name, what do I need to do to be able to use it?

To be able to use your domain name for, as an example, a website and/or email addresses, you need to configure and activate your name servers.

  • If you are using classic management, you must provide your own DNS servers.
  • If you are using online management, you can use the DNS servers offered by the Restena Foundation or update your own servers.

You can also host your own website and/or email address. As these services are not offered by the registry, you should contact other providers.

I've changed the name servers of my domain name but it isn't working. Why not?

Any changes you make to your DNS servers do not take effect immediately. They are subject to unavoidable delays

  • The timeline with the .lu registry: updated 24/7 on the hour.
  • The timeline for online availability: activated within 1 hour, after changes have been made by the .lu registry.
  • The timeline for changes (with existing name servers): depending on the TTL (Time to Live) related to your domain name, i.e. the time during which information in your domain name in the .lu zone is stored in memory. The TTL varies from one DNS provider to another.
  • At least one of the server names is not configured or is not correctly configured for your domain name.

Why are emails and/or websites related to my domain name not working?

There are several possible reasons. The main ones are as follows:

  • Your domain name has expired.
  • Your name servers are incorrect or not working.
  • Your domain name was not activated because incorrect technical information was provided at registration.

Web hosting also plays a crucial role in the running of your email and sites. We recommend that you check with your host that they are working properly.
